We were moving. Again. The movers packed up 4,000 books.
The estimate was light. The load was heavy. The company sales representative selling us the moving service got the numbers off by half of what it should have been. Maybe it was incompetence or perhaps he was attempting to underbid his competitors. Either way he got the contract.
We have moved some two dozen times in two dozen years of marriage so we knew a bit about the relocation process. Household baggage tonnage was estimated then weighted on the truck for the actual final cost.
But the cost was twice my company’s budget – I was wronged and about to lose my sense of humor with the moving company.
The moving company said that would not honor the original contract price estimate and they didn’t have to (darn the fine print). In this transaction all that I understood was CONTRACT. All that the company claimed was ESTIMATE. They said get lost. I got steamed.
But there was still recourse to humorless violence. The moving company was a member in good standing with the local Better Business Bureau. I challenged ethical behavior of the moving company. The BBB said let’s talk.
The BBB is an unbiased third-party trusted by both customer and business owner. The arbitration was non-binding but we both had a problem. The BBB as the peacemaker helped make a deal and the compromise both got a solution we could live with.
As Matthew 5:9 instructs, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
There is an alternative to the criminal or small claims court system. Find a mutual friend. Find a peacemaker.
