|If You Want Something Done Give It To A Busy (Wo)Man|
“How do you do it?” is the first question new friends always ask Charmaine. “Five kids and running a law firm? How?”
The answer is simple. But it’s not pretty.
Yes, Charmaine and I had dreams of making a difference. But we didn’t know the career path would merge marriage, children, public policy and advanced academic credentials. Nobody could. The narrative arch, as Hollywood would say, was chaotic. It was unplanned. It was imperfect. It was perfect for us.
It was also stinky.
Her career launch as president and CEO of Americans United for Life might have begun while working on the Huckabee for president race. We took the kids out of school and headed to Arkansas. Charmaine usually traveled with the campaign but she decided to family-road-trip with us to the Iowa caucus. It is December, 2007.
The temperature is in single digits. Back in our home near Washington, DC, a topcoat is a fashion statement but in Iowa winter coats are survival equipment. We load up the Penta-Posse, as we call our five children, in our monster SUV at O:Dark-thirty for the drive from Little Rock to Des Moines. Coats alone take up half the truck.
We stop at McDonald’s to get super-sized with biscuits, coffee, bacon, eggs, cheese, sausage and hash browns in Fayetteville, Arkansas. We consumed breakfast on the road after the meal consumed a week’s pay.
It was a long drive. There is no direct Inter-State highway connection between the two state capitals. Rolling countryside and riled-up kids. It wasn’t a smooth ride.
Charmaine was flying most of the campaign but decided to ride with us to spend some “quality” and quantity time with the wee-ones before the Iowa Caucus. She also wanted to get some work done on the trip up, perhaps.
But she got distracted in the middle of a policy statement-press release composition (they are often the same on the campaign trail), when I almost lost my composure.
James couldn’t handle the car ca-motion. He had gotten ill and had lost a lot more.
But I knew that Charmaine would still get her work done no matter what was thrown(up) at her. Execution is less a science than an artful mess.
Charmaine got the press release done on time. She has a support system.
